2020 has been a turbulent year for the majority of employers, and whilst we’re not out of the woods yet, there are positive signs that the economy is slowly recovering, and confidence is growing with recent vaccine news.
The number of vacancies being advertised is climbing steadily (ONS); however this coincides with the unfortunate news that unemployment has risen to a rate of 4.8%.
What does this mean for the UK job market?
Typically, as we head into the Christmas period job seeker activity tends to slow down as people wind down and begin to look ahead towards the new year. The post-Christmas period has consistently seen a huge surge in the amount of job seekers searching for a new career. There is also a surge in the number of people on the job market as seasonal roles come to an end.
In Q3, leading job boards Totaljobs and CV-Library reported candidate activity rose by around 20-30% (which reflects the rise in unemployment) - but as we head into the holiday season all signs are pointing towards the typical downturn in activity that we’ve seen consistently for many years.
